One of quite a few dance halls throughout Texas including one in Gruene, the Martinez Dance Club has been in existence since 1912. One of the oldest clubs in the San Antonio area, Martinez Social Club is still an active dance hall with two to four dances a week and a beautiful dance floor “to slide across.” The video presented here was shot on a Sunday afternoon, the day and time generally quite popular. Traditional country music is played by musicians from all over Texas. The hall is also used as a venue for weddings, anniversaries and birthday parties. Plus, the Czech Heritage Society has an annual event here celebrating the area’s rich heritage.
In addition to the dance hall, bowling lanes are available for use in another area of the club.
Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is Texas oldest continually operating “halls”. By design, not much has changed since the Hall was first built. The 6,000 square foot dance hall with a high-pitched tin roof still has the original layout with side flaps for open air dancing, a bar in the front, a small lighted stage in the back and a huge outdoor garden.
Opened in 1942 by John T. Floore himself, John T. Floore Country Store was not a store at all, but a unique Texas Dance Hall and Café. Floore’s is long renowned for its’ world famous tamales and homemade bread. Texas Monthly listed John T. Floore Country Store as one of the “50 things every Texan should do.”
