Sports & Recreation in San Antonio

San Antonio is one of America’s “outdoor” cities. According to the U.S. Weather Bureau, the sun shines here 300 days a year. Can you fault residents for their outdoor bent?

And with 250 city-owned parks, all usually filled by noon Saturday, it’s easy to take your activities outside.

Baseball

The San Antonio Missions, the Double-A minor-league affiliate of the San Diego Padres, call San Antonio home. Boasting thirteen Texas League titles—including their 2002 championship—the Missions play their home games at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Recreational leagues administered by the Parks & Recreation Department are found at various locations around the city.

Basketball

San Antonio is home to the five-time NBA champion Spurs. Home games are played at the Frost Bank Center (formerly the AT&T Center), located at 1 Frost Bank Center Drive (near E. Houston St.). Today, the team is led by generational superstar and 2024 Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama, alongside a core of young talent, continuing the winning tradition established by legends like Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.

City-sponsored basketball leagues dot the map. Parks and Recreation leagues begin in November at Woodlawn and San Fernando gyms.

Cycling

Off-road biking is available at McAllister Park (13102 Jones Maltsberger Rd), where bikers can find hard and soft surfaced trails. Across town, Schnabel Park (9600 Bandera Rd), has two miles of paved trails suitable for cycling, as well as jogging and walking. Road-biking is improving in San Antonio, marking an increasing number of city streets to better accommodate road bikers.

Football

Trinity University plays its home games on campus at Multi-Sports Stadium, while the Alamodome hosts a variety of professional, collegiate, and high school matchups. This includes the annual Alamo Bowl in late December, which currently features a premier matchup between top-tier teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 (or former Pac-12) conferences.

Recreational leagues are sponsored by the city and service organizations.

Golf

San Antonio is a golfer’s paradise. Over 30 courses of varying levels and abilities are found within easy drive of anywhere in the city. See the chart below.

Hiking

Close to downtown, the 1,903-acre Brackenridge Park is used by hikers and joggers.

The Cedar Flat Trail, which “runs up” to a look-out tower, highlights the 5.9 miles of trails at Eisenhower Park (19399 NW Military Hwy) just outside the entrance to Camp Bullis. The tower is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Friedrich Wilderness Park (21395 Milsa St) is located on IH-10, outside Loop 1604. The park offers a guided natural history hike over steep terrain. Pets and bicycles are strictly prohibited at this location.

Walker Ranch and Historic Landmark (12603 West Ave.) blocks off 80 acres near Panther Springs and Salado Creek. It also has a half-mile paved trail and playground.

Horse Racing

Retama Track 1, Retama Park, IH-35 in Selma, provides both live and simulcast racing.

Horseback Riding

The Hill Country State Natural Area (near Bandera, off FM 1077, (830) 364-3833) has 40 miles of trails for horseback riding. The terrain of this area ranges from broad creek bottoms to steep, rocky canyons. Stables abound in the area for riding instruction and shows.

In addition, other areas and teaching facilities are located throughout the area.

Soccer

Soccer is played every Spring and Fall in leagues set up by the Parks & Recreation Dept.

Swimming

Palo Alto College and the San Antonio Natatorium offer open swimming, lap work, lessons and aerobics. Many neighborhood subdivisions have their own pools.

Tennis

There are more than 140 public tennis courts at San Antonio’s parks across the city. Most are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Most notable is the McFarlin Tennis Center, 1503 San Pedro, and Fairchild Park, 1214 E. Crockett St.
